How do I change water hardness? I thought buying new minerals would help this.

FROG Products - June 16, 2023

Hi KT, the minerals assist the chlorine in fighting bacteria, but do not affect the water hardness. You can adjust your water hardness during the water balancing process. As you may know, the best way to balance your water is to focus on Total Alkalinity, then pH, and lastly your Total Hardness. For your pool, Total Hardness should be between 200 – 400 ppm. To increase Total Hardness, you will want to add a calcium hardness increaser such as calcium chloride. There unfortunately is no way to lower your calcium hardness other than to partially or fully drain your pool. Once your water is balanced, the minerals are free to help fight bacteria and ensure that the rest of your water care experience is smooth sailing. Would love to love this system but our test strips have always shown little or no chlorine. From day one it’s always shown a lighter color indicating my smartclor cartridge is empty which it obviously is not. We have a hottub that holds 400 gallons so I set it on 3 originally. I now have it set on 6 and the color has never changed. The water is clear so I just don’t worry about it but it’s discouraging that it never shows the correct measurement.

Hi Derek, Please be sure that you are using the FROG @ease Test Strips - specifically designed for measuring SmartChlor in the FROG @ease family of systems. These test strips are different than the general FROG Test Strips. As long as there is a color on the pad, you have SmartChlor in the hot tub - regardless of how shaded it is. If you have any more questions, feel free to reach out to our customer service team at 800-222-0169.

I use flippin frog for the 12 ft above ground pool. The color on my strips isn’t the easiest to match after dipping it in the pool because it’s not the exact color of anything shown. When I use other test strips it shows free chlorine at 10 ppm. Is this normal, or are the chlorine levels too high? I have it at the lowest setting.

I love the strips, but I do have a question. I often have where the pH shows Purple. Problem is the ranges are supposed to be from Orange to Red. All my other chemicals check out. Question is. Does Purple mean very low or very high pH???

Are the strips comparable with the app? I’ve not found anything that lines up exactly with the app

FAQ’s

In 2 seconds, you can know precisely whether or not your pH, Total Alkalinity and Total Hardness are balanced, or if your Chlorine or Bromine Cartridge /Bac Pac or Torpedo Pac needs replacing. Simply dip the FROG Test Strip into the water, remove with the pads facing up and shake once to remove the water on the FROG Test Strip. Then hold it up next to the color chart on the back of the bottle to compare colors.

*Compared to the minimum EPA recommended chlorine level of 1.0 ppm for a stabilized swimming pool. ∞For pools and hot tubs.
